Knowing your odds is important in poker because it gives you an idea when you are in a good or bad situation. Chances of Holding a Certain Hand or Better in First 5 Cards Dealt (Chart)

Here are a few terms that are very important when discussing poker odds:

• 1. Outs - The number of cards left in the deck that will improve a player's hand.
• 2. Pot Odds - The odds a player gets when analyzing the current size of the pot.
• 3. Bet Odds - The odds a player gets as a result of evaluating the number of callers to a raise.
• 4. Implied Odds - The odds a player is getting after the assumed result of betting for the remainder of the hand

To calculate your hand odds, you have to know how many "outs" your hand has. The definition of an "out" is a card in the deck that helps you make your hand. If you are holding (10d, 9d) and there are two diamonds on the flop, there are 9 more diamonds in the deck. This means you have 9 outs to complete your flush. Usually you want your outs to count toward a nut draw or best draw, but this is not always possible.

Pot odds are as simple as computing outs. You compare your outs or chance of winning to the size of the pot. If your chance of winning is much higher than the ratio of the pot size to a bet, then you have good pot odds. If your chance of winning is lower, then you have bad pot odds.

The next factors to look at are bet odds and implied odds and this involves predicting reactions of the other players. As far as bet odds are concerned, you have to try to factor in how many people are going to call a raise. With implied odds, you are actually thinking about player's reactions for the rest of the game.

One of the most important points in becoming a good poker player is knowing how to figure out your odds, especially in Texas Holdem.
